Tale of Evan Powell
Words by Moo
Art by Michael Weston her brother.
I - Introduction
There once was a boy
born with a gift his parents
tried to stifle from
the time they heard his first word.
His name was Evan Powell.

II - My Eleventh Birthday
My only gift's hand-me-down shoes.
My parents are watching the news.
Things start to get better
when I get a letter
from Duke's School of Jazzing and Blues.
III - The Letter
It said:
"We want you to come to our school.
We think it would be super cool.
Since you're now eleven,
my wonderful Evan,
we very much hope, dear, that you'll."
(signed, the Duke.)
IV - The Giant with the Bari Sax
My parents don't want me to go.
"Musicians are worthless, you know."
I sit and stay silent
and then there's this giant!
He looks at me and says "hello."
V - He's Playing Very Loudly
The giant starts playing his sax.
My parents are pissed to the max.
While he's jamming his jam,
they yell, "Take him, and scram!
He's yours if you'll get off our backs."
VI - Evan is Allowed to Go with the Giant
So the giant takes
Evan from his parents; they
are still reeling from
hearing the sounds they have tried
to keep from him for so long.
VII - Evan Tries to Object
"I think that there's been some mistake,"
I object, "'cos I never could take
any musical lessons -"
He ceased my confessions
by offering me a small cake.
VIII - The Promise of Future Lessons
And he says "Happy Birthday, me son,
now ye need teh relax, and have fun.
So eat yer confections
You'll have 'nuff time fer lessons,
I promise yeh, once yeh've begun."
IX - Evan's Instrument Chooses Him
We go to the instrument store.
Though I've never played one before
I run straight toward
an electric keyboard
and jam 'til I fall to the floor.
To be continued.
